Elon Musk bought a horse farm in Texas near Tesla's Gigafactory, author Walter Isaacson wrote. The biographer said Musk envisioned a house that looked like "something fell out of space." The Wall Street Journal has reported Musk was building a glass house, but he has denied the reports. "He needs a place where his sole resides and that's what the horse farm will be for him." At the time, Musk denied living in the modular house, saying that he lives in a different small house in Texas.

Musk wanted to save that money by moving the servers to one of X's other facilities, in Portland, Oregon. James Musk asked. "The dude is not very good at math," Musk told the musketeers. The lack of servers caused meltdowns, including when Musk hosted a Twitter Spaces for presidential candidate Ron DeSantis. And the Sacramento caper showed X employees that he was serious when he spoke about the need for a maniacal sense of urgency.

The following is adapted from Walter Isaacson's biography "Elon Musk," publishing Sept. 12. "Hey, I'd love to come see you and talk about philanthropy and climate," Bill Gates said to Elon Musk when they happened to be at the same meeting in early 2022. In the rarefied fraternity of people who have held the title of richest person on Earth, Musk and Gates have some similarities. Gates had shorted Tesla stock, placing a big bet that it would go down in value. "How can someone say they are passionate about fighting climate change and then do something that reduced the overall investment in the company doing the most?"

Tesla is facing a federal probe over its mysterious "Project 42," The Wall Street Journal reported. The SEC is also investigating whether the project involved using company funds for CEO Elon Musk's personal benefit, the Journal said. The project is internally believed to involve building a glass house for Musk, the Journal previously reported. It can be illegal to use company funds for personal expenses — especially when dealing with a publicly traded company. It's not clear if the building project is still in the works, or whether the glass order was ever delivered, the Journal reported on Wednesday.

Tesla's CFO Zachary Kirkhorn is leaving the carmaker, the company said in a regulatory filing. Zachary Kirkhorn, Tesla's chief financial officer, is leaving the electric-car company after working for the electric-car maker for about 13 years. Tesla staff told the Journal that Kirkhorn won Musk's approval by leading with "bad news" and staying in the billionaire's shadow. Kirkhorn worked as an analyst at McKinsey & Company before joining Tesla and previously interned at Microsoft, his profile says. Kirkhorn, Musk, and a spokesperson for Tesla did not respond to a request for comment ahead of publication.

A Tesla project that led to an internal review could be a home for its CEO Elon Musk, WSJ reported. Tesla board members were involved in investigating the order, WSJ reported. An opaque project within Tesla dubbed "Project 42" might be getting some transparency — the endeavor is said to involve a glass house for Elon Musk, The Wall Street Journal reported. It's not clear if the building project is still in the works, or whether the glass order was ever delivered, the Journal reported. It's also not clear what role, if any, Afshar still holds at Tesla (though an email that Insider sent to his Tesla email account did not bounce back).

Twitter staff nicknamed a Tesla exec "the Elon whisperer" because of his ability to read Elon Musk's mood. Omead Afshar, the Tesla exec, joined Twitter late last year, according to the Financial Times. Omead Afshar, who once led Tesla's Gigafactory in Austin, joined Twitter last year and is part of Elon Musk's tight inner circle, according to the Financial Times. Afshar has been helping Musk with "the biggest, stickiest issues at the company," according to the report. According to The Information, Musk's company is at least $70 million behind on a five-year contract it signed with Amazon Web Services in 2020.
Elon Musk's private jet hasn't flown to Starbase in almost three months, per jet-tracking data. He has flown to airports near SpaceX HQ in LA, however, and could have used its planes to fly to Starbase. Prior to Musk's Twitter acquisition, Brownsville, Texas was one of the private jet's most frequent destinations, per Sweeney's flight data. However, Musk's private jet has flown to airports near SpaceX's headquarters in Hawthorne, California since the Twitter acquisition, including Los Angeles International Airport, Sweeney's data shows. After purchasing Twitter, Musk said his workload jumped from "70 to 80 hours a week to probably 120."
A new Twitter recruit contacted a former employee to ask how things worked at the company. Onboarding training used to take three days but now lasts for 90 minutes, per The New York Times. The ex-staffer told The New York Times the worker got in touch to ask how services worked at Twitter because the training had been cut from three days to just 90 minutes. A former manager told The Times he'd seen documents showing the automaker had billed Twitter for some of its workers' services as if they were contractors. One of the latest additions to Musk's team is one of his right-hand men, Omead Afshar, per the report.
An aerial view of a Starship prototype stacked on a Super Heavy booster at the company's Starbase facility outside of Brownsville, Texas. While Elon Musk earns daily headlines over changes at Twitter, a significant reorganization is underway at his space company's Texas launch facility. The space venture also quietly brought on Omead Afshar, a Texas-based Tesla operations lead, as a vice president of Starship production. SpaceX had hoped to conduct the first orbital Starship launch as early as summer 2021, but delays in progress and regulatory approval have pushed back that timeline. NASA last month said SpaceX most recently told the agency that Starship's first orbital launch could take place as soon as early December.
Elon Musk has brought in Omead Afshar to help lead Starship production, Bloomberg reported. In July, Tesla was reportedly investigating Musk's righthand man after he authorized the purchase of construction materials that the system flagged as items that could be for Elon Musk's personal use. At the time, Tesla had already terminated several employees as a result of the investigation and Bloomberg reported Afshar was likely to leave the company next. Though, David Searle — the legal chief that was reportedly investigating Afshar — left the company in August, Bloomberg reported. Do you work at Tesla, SpaceX, or have insight to share?
